I danced the night away at the Stanes (formerly the Ring o Stanes) in Glenrothes. There was a bit of a mix-up though. The manager/owner greeted me at the door, asking if I had my ticket ready! When I said that I was the act for the night, he was most surprised. He had asked for the act that did last year's Hogmanay, and got me instead. He said he expected a bit of cabaret, and a lot of Dj-ing.
As anyone who knows me is aware, DJ-ing is not my forte, besides which I don't carry CDs or a player to play them on! I had to therefore let him know that I am purely a cabaret singer. To say he was not a happy bunny is an understatement. I thought I was going to be sent home at half time, when I could see the man wasn't happy with my performance - in fact I saw him mouth "Rubbish" in my direction. Nice. But then I am too professional to be put off by this too much.
As it was, there was really nothing that could be done, so I carried on. The audience were a bit reserved at the beginning of the night (understandable when you have all night to have a bevvy), but were all singing and dancing at their tables. Things got better and better, and by the end of the night people were crowding the dance floor, and I had to hold onto my mixer stand during Runrig's "Loch Lomond".
Oh, and I got paid!
Saturday 1st May 2004 - Ring o Stanes, Cadham
I was a last minute replacement for Rick Ross, who had a family bereavement.
I had never even heard of this pub, let alone been here. I was a little nervous at the average age of the crowd - about 25, I would say. However, the place was mobbed by the end of the night, and I had the chance to try out a few rock tunes (for a change).
This pub had just been taken over, and the new owner couldn't tell me much about the crowd etc when I asked, but they were excellent (apart from the couple of drunks who fell into, and bashed into, the equipment).
PLEASE STAY WELL AWAY FROM THE EQUIPMENT, GUYS!
