New Years eve is always one of the best payouts of the year for an act like mine, so its also one of the most nerve wracking - especially when it's a new venue.
When I arrived at this restaurant/bar I was not sure what they would be expecting - I don't really do "tartan and shortbread tin". I was told by Susan, one of the bar staff that she liked a bit of rock, but I wouldn't get away with anything like that. She was wrong.
The crowd were a bit on the quiet side for most of the night (I think most were saving themselves for the bells), and they were singing along to most songs. I think there was a bit of the old Fife problem I talk of so often though. They were only clapping now and again and even then it was only a small ripple. This made it difficult to know what to do so I just kept going with my usual mix of oldies, slow and pop stuff.
The last section of my act, I brought out "Sweet Home Alabama", "Black Betty" and a few other rocky ones and the audience seemed to enjoy this.
Its quite funny to see old (ish), bald ish punters giving their all on the air guitar.
(By the way that was Al's description of you more mature gentlemen, so I take no responsibility lol.)
At midnight we put on the TV to listen to the bells - I missed the actual countdown due to being caught short! - then the crowd came to life and seemed to have a great time singing along to "500 Miles", "Flower Of Scotland" and my last few songs.
All in all, I think it was a good night, the staff were very happy and I always take their comments on board because they see a lot more acts than me and therefore are in a better place to comment. I Enjoyed myself and hope to be back as a customer to try some of their food.. but also as an act if they want me...
